- It must be funny. If nobody laughs, it's not a read — it's just being mean
- It should contain a grain of truth. The best reads are funny because they're accurate
- It must be delivered with confidence. Mumble a read and you've already lost
- Know your audience. Reading your sister backstage is different from reading a stranger in the front row
- Never punch down. Read someone's outfit, their wig, their performance — never their identity
