The name comes from Vogue magazine; early voguers would mimic the poses of fashion models as a form of performance.
The documentary Paris Is Burning (1990) brought ballroom culture to global attention, documenting the houses, the balls, and the fierce competition that defined an era.
The Five Elements of Vogue
Modern vogue (specifically "Vogue Femme") consists of five elements, each scored in competition:
- Hand Performance: Intricate, fluid hand and wrist movements that tell a story
- Catwalk: Fierce runway walking with attitude and precision
- Duckwalk: Low-to-the-ground walking in a squatting position — harder than it looks
- Floor Performance: Spins, dips, and ground work including the legendary death drop
