Voguing 101: The Dance That Started a Revolution

Strike a Pose, Then Strike Another

Before Madonna made it mainstream, before TikTok made it a trend, voguing was a radical act of self-expression born from Black and Latinx queer communities in 1960s New York. It's not just a dance — it's a language, a competition, a survival mechanism, and one of the most influential art forms of the 20th century.

The Origins: Harlem Ballroom Culture

Voguing emerged from the ballroom scene, where queer people of color — often rejected by mainstream society and even mainstream gay culture — created their own spaces of competition, family, and validation. The name comes from Vogue magazine; early voguers would mimic the poses of fashion models as a form of performance.

The documentary Paris Is Burning (1990) brought ballroom culture to global attention, documenting the houses, the balls, and the fierce competition that defined an era.

The Five Elements of Vogue

Modern vogue (specifically "Vogue Femme") consists of five elements, each scored in competition:

  • Hand Performance: Intricate, fluid hand and wrist movements that tell a story
  • Catwalk: Fierce runway walking with attitude and precision
  • Duckwalk: Low-to-the-ground walking in a squatting position — harder than it looks
  • Floor Performance: Spins, dips, and ground work including the legendary death drop
  • Spins and Dips: Dramatic spins culminating in the iconic backbend dip

Voguing in Modern Drag

Today, voguing is everywhere — drag shows, music videos, dance competitions, and viral content. Shows like Pose brought ballroom stories to mainstream television. But it's crucial to honor the origins: this art form belongs to Black and Latinx queer communities, and respecting that history is non-negotiable.

Where to Learn

Many cities have active ballroom scenes and vogue workshops. Check with your local LGBTQ+ community center or search for ball events in your area. And remember: voguing isn't about perfection. It's about feeling it.
