Behind the Curtain: What Venues Need to Know About Booking Drag

Dear Venue Owners: This Is How You Do It Right

Booking a drag show can transform your venue. A good weekly drag night turns a dead Tuesday into your highest-grossing evening. A monthly drag brunch fills seats that would otherwise sit empty. But — and this is important — there's a right way and a very wrong way to work with drag performers.

The Business Case for Drag

The numbers don't lie:

  • Drag events consistently rank among the highest-revenue nights for bars and restaurants nationwide
  • Drag brunches have become a billion-dollar industry segment
  • Drag bingo draws demographics that wouldn't otherwise visit your venue
  • Social media coverage from drag events provides free marketing worth thousands

What You Need to Provide

Before you book a queen, make sure your venue has:

  • A changing area: Not a bathroom stall. Queens need a private space with a mirror, lighting, and a door that locks. Two hours of prep requires a proper dressing room
  • Decent sound: A working PA system with a microphone. Queens deserve better than a Bluetooth speaker
  • Lighting: Even basic stage lighting makes a massive difference. At minimum, don't perform drag under fluorescent office lights
  • A performance area: It doesn't have to be a stage, but clear a space. Remove tables, create a runway, give the queen room to work
  • Security: Especially for late-night shows. Queens face harassment. Have their backs

Paying Queens Fairly

This is where most venues get it wrong:

  • Pay a guaranteed fee. "You can keep the tips" is not fair compensation
  • Standard booking fees: $150-$500+ per queen per show depending on market and experience
  • Tips should be ON TOP of the booking fee, not instead of it
  • Pay the same night. Not next week, not "when the owner is in"

Building a Long-Term Relationship

The best venue-queen partnerships are ongoing. Weekly residencies build loyal audiences. Consistent schedules let queens promote effectively. And venues that treat queens well get the best performers — word travels fast in drag communities.
